It's that scary time of year, when kidlit writers everywhere drum up 100 words (or less!) for Susanna Leonard Hill's Annual Halloweensie Contest. This year, entries had to include the words "goblin", "chill", and "tiptoe" in one form or another. Here's what I came up with.
Teacher rapped her ruler on the desk.
“Two reminders,” she rasped.
“Tomorrow is our Halloween gala; today our new classmate arrives.”
Questions rang out.
“Is it hairy?”
“Is it scary?”
“Is it like us?” her students asked,
tiptoeing around the issue.
Teacher glared. “I gather it’s a goblin.”
The class gasped.
Again, the ruler.
“Look around you.”
Students twisted, turned,
took in vampires,
zombies,
werewolves,
ghouls.
Not a single goblin.
Hands rose, questions flew.
Again, the chilling glare.
“A goblin is strange, a goblin is new, but I assure you there is nothing to fear. We are all monsters here.”
